![]() It’s a hard path,” says Republican strategist Chip Felkel. ![]() The Never Trumpists are mad at him for his being part of the administration and support of an impeached, convicted insurrection promoter. “What we have seen over the last half dozen, eight years now is that Donald Trump is a more durably popular figure than anybody else they’ve been able to bring down the pike,” says Johns Hopkins political scientist Daniel Schlozman.īut between that lack of a clean break with Trump and his constructive work within the administration for most of his tenure as vice president, Pence also has a difficult job appealing to Republicans who completely oppose the former president, making finding his lane all the more difficult. The decision to hold back on more aggressive attacks on Trump could be driven by the enduring advantage he still has in the party. Since then, Pence has called out Trump for endangering his family and other people at the Capitol, though he’s also stopped short of full-blown critiques on other issues like the indictment the former president faced in New York. Pence is famously known for refusing to challenge the election results on January 6 as Trump demanded ( a power Pence did not even legally have), and being a major target of the president in the rally leading up to the insurrection. A February 2023 Monmouth poll also found that 34 percent of Evangelical voters said they’d like to see Trump as the nominee, 32 percent said DeSantis, and 3 percent said Pence. In a spring focus group the Republican Accountability Project did with eight Evangelical voters, seven of the eight chose Trump as the candidate they’d support between him and Pence, while the last person abstained. Many of the socially conservative voters Pence is looking to appeal to are also still fans of Trump, and it’s uncertain if Pence will be able to change that. “Mike Pence is making a pitch that would make sense if it was 15 or 20 years ago,” says Ramer. ![]() Many Republican voters are increasingly open to these stances. Pence has called for Republicans to resist “unprincipled populists” and ideas that have taken hold since Trump’s presidency, including isolationist foreign policy and anti-democratic sentiments. The question, however, is whether a large enough contingent of Republican voters is interested in this message and whether it would differentiate him enough from a packed field. “His authenticity, experience, and conservative credentials are second to none in the field, and those things will stand out-particularly in Iowa-as the campaign unfolds,” said Michael Ricci, a communications strategist for Committed to America. As Republicans have tried to navigate the political backlash they’ve faced in being too harsh on abortion, Pence has been one of the few prominent candidates who has embraced a legal challenge of medication abortion and efforts to take it “off the market.” Pence has emphasized, too, his commitment to religious liberty and that he believes marriage is “between a man and a woman.” He’s also long held more hard-line positions on restricting abortion, and he previously opposed same-sex marriage. Already, he has said he’s open to cuts to Social Security and Medicare, and expressed robust backing for Ukraine, both positions that contrast heavily with how Trump and DeSantis have approached these topics. “The Never Trump Republicans don’t like him because he worked for Trump.” Pence has to navigate competition - and confrontation - with TrumpĪ former governor of Indiana and longtime House member prior to becoming Trump’s vice president, Pence has government experience and conservative bona fides he can lean into as part of his campaign. “With the red meat Republican base voters, they think he betrayed Trump on January 6,” says Gunner Ramer, the political director of the Republican Accountability Project, an anti-Trump GOP group that’s not affiliated with any candidates. Because of that dynamic, it’s uncertain who the supporters of his candidacy will be. Pence’s past confrontation with Trump over the latter’s attempts to undermine the 2020 election results, and his work for the administration, also make it difficult for him to win over either Trump loyalists or the narrower segment of Republicans who oppose the former president, respectively. Trump is far ahead with 54 percent support, DeSantis follows with 21 percent, and Pence comes in third with 5 percent. Currently, FiveThirtyEight’s polling average has Pence lagging Trump and DeSantis by wide margins. Whether he’ll be able to do that, however, is in doubt. Then I was like, ‘’Well, okay!’’ and look, you can make a film with the best intentions and with the best talent, and it just doesn’t work. You know, the writer is the first person off the project, so I didn’t see the dailies or the rushes I didn’t see any part of it until it was done. Plus Joe is happy with it, and Barbara is happy with it. Once it came out and was good, yeah! I think it’s good I’ve seen it a couple of times now. So yeah, there was a lot of emotion in making this.Īnd I suppose that made this feel like a good way to pay tribute to Stuart as well. He liked being around younger directors and talking to them, so Joe had gotten to know him and was inspired by him. I mean, Stuart was my best friend we were college roommates, but Stuart was very generous to young directors he was a mentor figure. And Joe knew Stuart too, it wasn’t just Barbara and me. Understandable after all this time! I suppose that made this quite an emotional experience for you. Even though is almost exactly the same story, it’s got elements to it that we thought really work. When you’ve had a script for decades, you sort of get locked into certain character conceptions and Joe threw a wrench into that, gave it a twist, and allowed me to see it as a refresh. Joe had some ideas that sort of refreshed the script. Joe Lynch came on as director, and bingo bongo it was gonna get made. She showed it to her producing partners, and they loved it, but it didn’t get close to getting made until she showed it to Joe Lynch. So I told Barbara, ’’I wrote this script for Stuart, you would get this, why don’t you take a look at it?’’ and she did, and she loved it. So we started doing theater work together, so we did Edgar Allan Poe and Re-Animator the Musical, which was a great deal of fun. Then we did it again in the early 2000s, and it was not made again, and every time it was not made for the same reason, and I will let you guess what that reason was. Then it was optioned and not made, we tweaked it, it was optioned…and not made again. So I started working on it, rewrote it, we were happy with it, and Stuart, with his producer hat on, started schlepping it around Hollywood and Burbank. Plus, as many Lovecraft stories are, it was fascinating and horrifying. We Identified The Thing on the Doorstep a really well-told story that had more story value to it than many other Lovecraft stories have. ![]() When I was there Barbara asked me if I had any scripts lying around, and this was a script I had written for Stuart back in the mid-to-late ‘90s because it was gonna be the next Lovecraft. Then when we were able to do a live memorial for him in LA, I flew out and attended. Then unfortunately, terribly, Stuart passed away at the beginning of the pandemic and there were several Zoom memorials for him, and I reconnected with Barbara on those. You’ll notice she and Jeffrey (Combs) worked together three times. Stuart was a great actors director, and he loved working with actors, and he tried to keep a company of actors he used again and again. It was reconnecting with her because she wears a producer hat now, and I, of course, knew her as a scream queen back in the films we made together (Re-Animator, From Beyond, Castle Freak) with Stuart Gordon. What is it about Suitable Flesh that brought you back?ĭennis Paoli: It was Barbara Crampton. Neil Bolt: You’ve never really been away from writing due to your day job, but it’s been a while since you had been this involved in film or television to this degree. ComingSoon’s Senior Editor for Horror, Neil Bolt, talked to Paoli about how Suitable Flesh finally got made, changing the script to reflect a different time, and offered advice on how to adapt Lovecraft. The finished product is Suitable Flesh, and stars Crampton alongside Heather Graham and The Babysitter’s Judah Lewis in a gender-swapping tale of cosmic horror. ![]() ![]() ![]() This search moves the incremental event (that is, events with the text "Include files modified") forwards in time by 1 second (these event almost always occur on the same second, so 1 second seems to be enough). I can now show that the issues is somehow related to the order of the events. Update: This still occurs in 4.1.x as of 4.1.2. Adding keepevicted=t makes no difference. The first one containing just event #1 and would be marked with closed_txn=0, and the second would include events 2 and 3 just as before, and it should be marked with closed_txn=1. The best theory I have about why this isn't working has to do with transaction automatically discarding non-closed transactions, but if that were the case then adding keepevicted=t should output two transactions. I've tried playing with the different transaction options, but haven't found anything that works as of yet. My transaction still contains just event 2 and 3, just as if did with my first search. As a result of her expansions, there are walled-off exterior windows and doors that were not removed as the house grew in size. In the San Jose News of 1897, it was reported that a seven-story tower was torn down and rebuilt sixteen times. She was known to rebuild and abandon construction if the progress did not meet her expectations, which resulted in a maze-like design. While the home was similar in scope to other homes built then, it was unusual for a woman to look after such a project and, Colin Dickey states in his book Ghostland: an American History in Haunted Places, she could be considered an architectural pioneer of her time. She took inspiration for the house from the world's fairs that were common then. She designed the rooms one by one, supervised the project, and sought advice from the carpenters she hired. With plans to expand the farmhouse, Winchester hired at least two architects but dismissed them, deciding to do the planning herself. Winchester and her husband had developed an interest in architecture and interior design while building a home on Prospect Hill in New Haven. Winchester died on September 5, 1922, at the age of 83. In 1904, Winchester purchased a large property near the hamlet of Burlingame, north of Coyote Point, then bought a houseboat, or ark as they were called at the time, instead of building a house. Winchester subsequently purchased a home for the couple closer to the train station for Fredrick to travel to work from. One of the homes was offered to Daisy and her new husband to live in, which they accepted. That same year, Winchester purchased several homes and properties in Atherton. In 1903, Winchester paid for Daisy's wedding to Frederick Marriott III. They attended charitable events together and were paying members of Associated Charities and the Red Cross. Merriman became Winchester's administrative assistant, looking after business correspondence and banking. In 1890, Winchester's niece, Marion Merriman (called Daisy) aged around twenty-one, came to live with her. Since the property reminded her of Llanada Alavesa from the Basque area, she named her new home Llanada Villa. She purchased the property from John Hamm which included a two-story, eight-room farmhouse. ![]() He showed her a forty-five-acre ranch for sale that was located near San Jose.
